Angling Research--Catch-and-release can be either voluntary or mandated through regulations that protect certain groups of fish. For anglers targeting specific species, muskies, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass were released at rates of 99, 97, and 97 percent, respectively. Eighty-six percent of targeted pike were released. Walleyes and panfish were released at significantly lower rates than other species (both 67 percent).
